Privacy Policy

Books in Bytes (booksinbytes.in) is run by Abhay Kumar Jaiswal in India. This policy covers the website and the installable app. We collect only what we need to run your account and track your reading, and we never sell your data or use it for advertising.

What we collect

• Account details: your name, email address and mobile number. Your password is stored only as a secure hash, so we can’t read it.
• Reading activity: the books you open, how far you’ve read, the books you finish or save for later, the goals you enrol in, and the days you read (for your streak).
• Book requests: the title, author, ISBN and any note you send when you request a book.
• Security records: the IP address of sign-in attempts, kept for up to 24 hours to stop password guessing, and one-time links for confirming your email or resetting your password.

How we use it

• To create and secure your account, and to confirm your email address.
• To keep your place in every book and show your Study Room, goals, streaks and recommendations.
• To review and respond to the books you request.
• To send service emails, such as email confirmation and password links. We don’t send marketing emails or messages to your mobile number.

Your mobile number is used only to keep to one account per person. It is never shared or used for marketing.

Cookies and storage on your device

• One essential sign-in cookie keeps you signed in for up to 60 days. We use no advertising or tracking cookies, and no analytics.
• Your browser stores a few small settings, such as whether you dismissed the “Install app” prompt.
• Books you download for offline reading are saved only in your browser on that device. You can remove them on the Downloads page.

Who else handles your data

• Hosting: the site and its database are hosted by Hostinger, which stores the data on our behalf.
• Email delivery: service emails are sent through our hosting provider’s email service.
• Fonts: pages load typefaces from Google Fonts, so Google receives your IP address when fonts load.

We don’t share your personal data with anyone else, except where the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and reading history for as long as your account exists. Unconfirmed sign-ups are removed after a short time. When you delete your account, your details, reading history, goals, saved books and book requests are deleted with it.

Your choices and rights

• Update your name and mobile number in My account.
• Delete your account and all its data at any time from My account.
• Ask for a copy of your data, a correction, or anything else about your data by emailing mail@abhayjaiswal.com.

We handle your data in line with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. You may also raise a complaint with the Data Protection Board of India.

Children

Books in Bytes is meant for readers aged 18 and over. Younger readers should use it only with a parent or guardian’s consent.

Security

Passwords are hashed, the site is served over HTTPS, and sign-in attempts are rate-limited. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don’t use elsewhere.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. Significant changes will be shown on the site.
